Job Description:
Budget Title: Senior Counselor (SL-4)
Salary: $56,000 - $63,000 (10-month, college-year)
Anticipated start date: July 30, 2026
Binghamton University's Counseling Center (UCC) seeks a Senior Counselor for a full-time 10-month renewable position with benefits for a counselor providing mental health counseling services to a culturally diverse student population. This is a generalist position serving students with a wide range of issues with preference given to applicants with interest and experience in multicultural counseling, especially with students of color. Early career applicants are welcome.
Duties of the position include direct clinical services as primary: short-term individual and group counseling, assessment and crisis counseling. Duties also include some counseling-related work with the campus community including consultation, outreach, psycho-educational workshops, and liaison/consultant relationships. Duties may also include clinical supervision and training of interns. The position may at times involve consultation or outreach outside of core business hours. All clinical staff positions involve some administrative duties and roles.

The UCC supports its clinicians engaging in flexible clinical approaches with high quality individual supervision and team-based peer consultation. We are an interdisciplinary team integrated in the Health and Counseling department and we work closely with Psychiatry which is co-located in the same building. Requirements:
- Master's degree (or higher) in mental health, or a related field, conferred by start date -OR- in a related doctoral program with degree requirements completed by start date.
- Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, to practice in New York by start date. This could include eligibility for a limited permit or being in final year of doctoral supervision toward licensure.
- Generalist clinical skills and experience in assessing and intervening with a range of disorders, concerns, and degrees of pathology in treatment.
- Multicultural awareness, knowledge, responsiveness, and skills to work with culturally diverse student populations.
- Willingness to work in a time-limited model of care.
- Experience in or willingness to provide crisis intervention.
- Ability to handle a busy caseload in a dynamic environment while completing appropriate charting and administrative tasks.
- Proficiency in oral and written communication skills, giving presentations, and leading group discussions.
- Ability to collaborate.
- Ability to handle spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advance planning.
- Team-oriented, "user-friendly" approach to students and university staff.
- Availability and willingness to participate in occasional evening or weekend activities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in multicultural counseling.
- Experience providing counseling to people of color.
- Advanced mental health license or credential: LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, or related advanced license -OR- a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or related field.
- Experience in a university or college counseling center setting.
- Active participation in relevant professional organizations.
